Capulin Cherry (Prunus serotina var. capuli) - 12 seeds
Other names: Prunus salicifolia, Padus serotina var. capuli
This is a fruit tree from the Mexican mountains. Perhaps surprisingly, this species grows and overwinters well in our garden in Poland (hardiness zone 6/7). The plants also bear fruit every year here. The fruits are large for a bird cherry (the size of a small cherry) and very tasty. Their juice is non-staining, and the flesh is light in color. They can be used to make delicious wines, liqueurs, preserves, and jams, but they also taste delicious as a dessert fruit. Seeds should be sown outdoors in autumn (and the sowing area should be mulched) or in a cool cellar, or alternatively stratified in moist sand in the refrigerator for 2-3 months. They come from our garden and were harvested in the summer of 2025. We recommend mulching young seedlings for the first few years. Older trees are already hardy. A packet of 12 quite large seeds is available for sale.
