The old, "iconic", hairloom Japanese watermelon variety. Fruit weighing 1-1.5 kg, with thin skin and numerous, small, hard seeds (but they are so small that they don't interfere with eating). Very sweet and tasty. This variety has the shortest growing season of all watermelons. In the tropics, it bears fruit in less than two months, but in temperate climates, it takes longer, but still ripens without any problems. This variety is very difficult to obtain, considered a delicacy in Japan and often commanding high prices. It can be an expensive gift given as a sign of respect. The seeds are open-pollinated.
