Chinese Hackberry (Celtis sinensis) - large-fruited form - 12 seeds
Huckberries are long-lived trees that produce very hard ("iron") wood and edible fruit, which are used to make sweet flour or excellent wines. They are close cousins of elms. Chinese Huckberry is a small, shrubby tree commonly grown in California for ornamental purposes. This species usually produces very small fruit, but this large-fruited form was discovered years ago by a seed dealer in California. The fruit is about 8-10 mm in diameter and the color is first orange, then burgundy-brown. The tree is self-pollinating and bears fruit annually in our garden in Poland. It comes into fruiting early when grown from seed (after a few years, when it is about 2.5-3 m (= 8-10 feet). Seeds should be sown in autumn in a cool cellar or in the garden (and then the sowing place should be mulched). They germinate irregularly and slowly in the first or second (sometimes even the third) spring. Fresh seeds were harvested in November 2025. Packet of 12 seeds. Only a few packages is available.
