Another valuable variety of Japanese sweet chestnut (C. creanata), very hardy, disease-resistant, early maturing (though slightly later than Tanzawa), and producing quite large, tasty nuts, is a small tree (3.5-5.5 m tall = 12-18 ft) (usually slightly larger than Tanzawa)..

If you want to order chestnuts (this or other taxa), check the regulations for your country (we can ship them outside the EU, but only at the buyer's risk, so it's best to check whether the import of these scions into your country is not prohibited).

Mr. Piotr Banaszczak from the Rogów Arboretum and Mrs. Anna Jankowska, a renowned chestnut and walnut breeder (and former tomato grower), told us that there is a significant incompatibility within the Castanea genus, and that scion and rootstock do not always fuse. Interestingly, the ease of obtaining hybrids (generative) is much greater.

However, when propagating chestnuts vegetatively, you can be sure to obtain 100% identical results, whereas hybrids can occur among seedlings propagated from seed.

We sell 4 grafting sticks (scions).

We include a plant passport with orders.
