A rare hybrid of the rare Chinese chestnut species - Seguin chinkapin (Castanea seguinii) and probably the Henry chinkapin (C. henryi), plants very rarerly met in cultivation in Europe. The nuts are very small but very tasty, 1 per shell. It ripens in the half of November. In milder climates the trees can be evergreen. They blooms all season (to autumn). The shrub/tree is not very tall. The two parent plants are prized for resistance to chestnut diseases and pests.
If you want to order chestnuts (this or other taxa), check the regulations for your country (we can ship them outside the EU, but only at the buyer's risk, so it's best to check whether the import of these scions into your country is not prohibited).
Mr. Piotr Banaszczak from the Rogów Arboretum and Mrs. Anna Jankowska, a renowned chestnut and walnut breeder (and former tomato grower), told us that there is a significant incompatibility within the Castanea genus, and that scion and rootstock do not always fuse. Interestingly, the ease of obtaining hybrids (generative) is much greater.
However, when propagating chestnuts vegetatively, you can be sure to obtain 100% identical results, whereas hybrids can occur among seedlings propagated from seed.
We sell 3 grafting sticks (scions).
We include a plant passport with orders.
