This is large (often more than 3 m = 10 ft tall), dense climber which creates underground perennial tuberous rhizome to 15cm (= 6 inch) diameter. The flowers are white, numerous - in summer. Fruits 1 cm long thorny nutlets - in summer/autumn. This is very frost hardy perennial (probably to zones 5/7) native to central China. It resembles a Caucasian spinach (Hablitzia tamnoides) in appearance, but this is not edible, but only medicinal. Blooms and fruits in first year from seeds, if sown early.
