Japanese woodland nettle (Laportea macrostachya) - 3 aerial bulbils
Other name: Laportea cuspidata
An East Asian, exceptionally beautiful perennial native to regions such as China, Japan and Myanmar. The accession for sale here comes from temperate regions of Japan, making it very frost-resistant. It winters well in zones 7/8, and even 6, if well-covered (it overwinters better than the related Laportea bulbifera). This plant is similar to L. bulbifera and also produces bulbs in the leaf axils in autumn, but fewer in number. It is also more ornamental. The leaves are also edible – spinach made from its leaves is extremely tasty and highly prized. The bulbils should be sown in autumn in a cool cellar or stratified in moist moss over winter. We sell a pack of 3 aerial bulbils. Only a few packs are available.
