Japanese bulbiferous nettle (Laportea bulbifera) - 5 aerial bulbs
The East Asian, much oryginal perennial native to regions such as India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, southern and eastern China, the Russian Far East, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia (Java). The accession for sale here comes from temperate regions of Japan, making it very frost-resistant. It overwinters well in zones 7/8, and even 6, if well-mulched. It's similar to our European nettle, but it forms tubers in the leaf axils in autumn, which overwinter and produce new plants the following season. For us, it's an incredibly interesting species, which we first read about in books and then managed to acquire. There are many nettle fans and many tuberous plant enthusiasts, and here it's all in one :-) An additional advantage is the potential for this plant in the kitchen – spinach made from its leaves is incredibly tasty and highly valued. The tubers should be stored in slightly damp peat moss in the fridge over winter and planted out in spring, or (in milder climates) planted directly in the garden in autumn. In sale a package of 5 aerial bulbils available (harvested from the stems of our plants in October 2025 and stored moist).
